Beauty and the Beach
Summer is here and like most of us, you’re probably hitting up the beach in the next couple of weeks. We spend months waiting for summer vacation and planning our hottest outfits, but we usually don’t pay much attention to buying new beauty products to help us beat the summer heat. Sure, you probably go through the motions of picking a shade or two darker in foundation, but beach ready glam is more than just bronze makeup. You’ll need products that help withstand the harsh elements of sun, water, and sand.
So, how do you look fresh-faced and fabulous in 90+ degree weather? Simple! Follow these 6 tips for the best beach glow that lasts all day long.
- Oil Control
Let’s face it, our pretty little pores produce a LOT of oil. And the heat doesn’t help! Baking in the sun by the poolside can really make us sweaty and add a lot of extra oil on our face we don’t need (and not to mention clog pores causing an untimely breakout.) The #1 summer essential in every girl’s beach bag has got to be oil control sheets. They’re small, indiscrete, and can be quickly used in the bathroom in case of sweat overload. Plus, your friends will love you when you whip these bad boys out and offer them one too!
- Shield Your Skin
We’ve been harping on it for years, but sunscreen is so very important that it deserves to be on every summer checklist. Though usually not on purpose, many people don’t apply SPF to their lips or scalp (they probably just forget TBH!) You not only need an SPF of 30 or higher for your face and body, but you also need to protect your pretty pout with an SPF enhanced lip balm. If not, you could have dry, peeling lips later and that isn’t a good look on anyone! A continuous spray sunscreen works well for lightly coating your hair, protecting your precious scalp that never sees the light of day (but always seems to burn and peel when you hit up the pool or beach.)
- Fake A Base Tan
No UV-rays required! Stay out of the tanning bed and prolong your youthful radiance as long as you can. Build a “fake” base tan with sunless tanning products at home – or opt for a professional spray session at a salon for the best results. Be sure to ask for a custom contoured look that accentuates your body in all the right places, and you bet you’ll be the hottest beach babe on the market! If you decide to save a few bucks and do it at home, be sure to read reviews to find the best bronze option, sans streaks or an orange hue. There are some great options at Sephora that don’t break the bank! Plus, you can take it with you on vacation and reapply if you need to.
- Prime & Set
If you want your makeup to last all day at the beach, then you’re going to need to invest in a good primer and setting spray. A primer will help minimize the appearance of your pores (which can look enlarged when it’s hot out) plus, it will help your makeup cling to your skin instead of sweating off like it normally would. A setting spray is really just the added insurance that it will stay in place. No one wants a whack eyebrow that accidentally got smudged half-way through the day. Keep them fierce and intact by utilizing these two products and trust us when we say, it’s totally worth it.
- Waterproof Your Life
Mascara isn’t the only makeup you need to buy a waterproof version of. They also make waterproof concealer, eyeliner, lip liner, and even face powder! Even if you don’t fully submerge your face in water, it’s still necessary to buy waterproof everything in the summer because it also protects against sweat (and unwanted splashing by kids and boyfriends who don’t understand that we Just. Don’t. Want. Our. Hair. Wet.) Seriously, when will they get it?
- Refresh Tired Makeup
After a full day of outdoor activities and pool lounging, your makeup doesn’t quite have the same vibrancy it did at the beginning of the day (to no fault of your own.) It loses some of its life and starts looking dull and tired… so, what’s the perfect pick-me-up? A facial spray to liven up your makeup and get you through dinner! These fancy facial mists will revive your skin with some moisture, making you look awake and ready to take on the night.
